Duration: 30 min.
The process of choreographic depersonalization is not new in the local contemporary dance space, but Sanja Nešković Peršin gives it a completely new form, in which we, the spectators, are placed in front of a human Thing, to which we have to assign a name.
She is known to the Slovenian dance audience both for her work at the Ljubljana-based Slovenian National Theatre Opera Ballet and her work in numerous non-institutional projects, from Dance Theatre Ljubljana, the Muzeum Institute, to her own independent performances. The personal dance stance of Sanja Nešković Peršin has always been inhabited by a certain untamed, wild, vulnerable and poetic, yet ever so clever wittiness. Her last solo, The Moment Before, creates an unusual dance body: a body beyond time and concrete subjectivity, beyond what can be discerned and unambiguously identified, a mysterious and formless being trapped in an impenetrable place of itself. This is why it confronts us with the task of reflecting on how we see when we look at bodies, what we see when we look at dance, and how we recognise their different qualities and particularities.
Sanja Nešković Peršin in collaboration with film artist Atej Tutta offers us a possible key to contemplate her dancing, as it is submerged into a precisely sculpted audio-visual atmosphere. What is the body as a screen and what does it actually contain when it is embodied in a dance act? What is the body as a piece of optical data and what actually transcends its exclusive opticality? How is it even possible that our quotidian moments are mostly sensed by bodies in two dimensions only, and what else, besides such perceptions, is actually being stored in us?
