dance performance and discussion
The Old Power Station
Duration: 75 min.
In Portugal, homeland and history are conflicting notions due to the Portuguese colonial past. Even the most personal story is often a very complex inter-continental affair. In .G Rito, choreographer Piny invites dancers and performers, fellow citizens from different cultural backgrounds, to celebrate together feminine vitality and joy, two qualities that gave their ancestors dignity and meaning in life in the troubled past. The creators of the performance stated: »We have restored our Portuguese roots in the body of women working in the fields, in the land, in the songs they sang while working, and we have created a universe where the voice leads the ritual, the machine intersects with the instrument played and bodies oscillate between veneration, abandonment, trance, pleasure and struggle.« In .G Rito, the ghosts of the past meet contemporary urban dance rituals, in which bodies and their identities emerge through socialising, reconciling differences and new friendships. In this type of world, nothing is certain, nothing is clear beyond the common experience – of life and joy.
