The tragedy of “true masculinity” lies in its own erasure of humanity, says the American writer Ocean Vuong. It is not, he believes, irreparable. In recent years, the phenomenon of toxic masculinity has been widely examined \u2212 probably also because we have all, globally, become its hostages. Milo\u0161 Janji\u0107 is interested in how this virus settles into the body, and what it does once there.<\/span><\/p>\n

Dancer, choreographer and designer Milo\u0161 Janji\u0107 has, in recent years, focused on the postures and predicaments of normative heterosexual masculinity, and on its authoritarian and toxic manifestations (machismo, misogyny, femicide, auto\/homophobia, militarism, and radical nationalism). He has approached the male body as an archive of masculinity, and its actions as a form of ideological training.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>bone(r) in the throat<\/span><\/i> presents a collection of perspectives on toxic masculinity through the lens of five young men, who, through continuous reflection, offer alternative masculinities, playing with learned bodily actions and discourses, pushing them to the point of absurdity, and sharing intimate testimonies of their own upbringings, deeply shaped by social norms. The phenomenon is approached through scenic documentation and speculation on specific situations, from individual to collective experiences.<\/span><\/p>\n

The performance focuses on bodily actions, narratives, and operations that are incorporated into the male body during maturation, shaping specific behavioural patterns that the body, under societal pressure, reproduces. Simultaneously, the body itself is observed as both the author and consequence of the harmful effects that masculinity has on contemporary society \u2212 on women, but also on men themselves \u2212 particularly in patriarchal societies where boys\u2019 socialization often normalizes violence,\u201d write the performance\u2019s creators.<\/span><\/p>\n
