With his exhibition yet to become, titled On the Line, Hristian Nashulovski explores the notion of the border as a site where identities collide and as a passage between spaces of possible differences, as well as the permeability of borders. During CoFestival, the format of the exhibition will itself be subjected to forms of visible uncertainty, turning from exhibited objects into a series of events marked more by temporal than spatial qualities.

“An exhibition yet to become is an experiment that uses a transforming installation and performances to raise questions about the border. ON THE LINE is based on the documentation of a performative act that took place at the illegal border between the First and the Third World. The border is constructed as a line of rupture within our experience and humanity. It divides us into those from here and those from there. Through the performances, the exhibition shifts from the inescapable experience of the subject to an opening of perspectives on power, consent, position and desire, and to a decoding of the border as a phenomenon. The border will become a confrontation with human autonomy, with reason and politics, as it addresses anyone who experiences the Western world as an open path to a better life. ON THE LINE speaks about every upcoming border that is increasingly difficult to face, and about anyone who feels like the least desirable being while, in a desperate movement, struggling to prove their integration into the First World.”

For every expression of territoriality, the border is a form of defence and protection, of halting and finality. The border separates one ground from another: forms of hereness from forms of thereness, the inside from the outside. It separates us from others. It also separates us from alteration and change. In this latter sense, borders have a temporal aspect: they shield the present and the past from possible futures. For territorialists, what matters is where they are, not who they are. People without time want merely to occupy space. If we look at economic, political and social migrations, they are usually connected with movements from territories where time stands still to territories where time flows, from where there are no possibilities to where there are. From where we are forever what we have always been, to where we may yet become something else. From identities to differences.
