In Sergio Matis’s latest work, Unrest (2021), the ghosts of Sumerian, ancient Greek and Roman epics don’t sit at the table with the performers as evening visitors who appear when we make time for them, the dancing archaeologists of the performance are excavating them from their own bodies. Relics of Western mind appear through the lens of eco-feminism in the form of gestures and movements, and by their presence they reveal themselves as exposed reliefs of bodily actions, sediments that move our bones and flesh with their old, omnipresent choreography, the shaper of Western thinking.

Sergiu Matis comes from Cluj Napoca in Romania and he started his dance career at the Dance Theatre Nuremberg (now the Ballet of the State Theatre Nuremberg). He has been living in Berlin since 2008, where he completed his MA degree as part of the SODA programme and has developed into one of the most promising new names in European choreography in recent years. This is his first appearance in Slovenia.
